MANAS NATIONAL PARK


Perhaps the best known tiger reserve in Assam is Manas National Park. Bordering Bhutan this park is home to almost one hundred tigers. In addition there are significant populations of elephant, leopard, deer and a wide range of birdlife.

The park is composed of a mixture of moist deciduous forest, semi-evergreen forest and grassland.

Manas harbours the highest number of Schedule 1 wildlife in India. The animals found here are Tiger, Elephant, Leopard, Clouded Leopard, Black Panther, Swamp deer, Binturong, Otter, Hog, and Barking Deer.

The bird life at Manas is excellent. Bengal florican, three types of Hornbill, peacock etc. In total about 300 species of birds are found in Manas.

According to last Elephant census in 1997, the total population of Elephants is 280. Most of the Elephants in Manas come from the Bhutan part of Manas. In the Tiger census of 1997 the total number recorded was eighty nine.
